KAPIT: River transport users here have been warned to take extra care due to the very high water level.

Kapit District Officer Cerisologo Sabut, who is Kapit District Disaster Management Committee chairman, gave the advice following unusually wet weather coinciding with the release of water from the Bakun Dam.

He also advised riverine transport users to wear life jackets and ensure their boats are in good order.

The high water level coupled with strong currents could potentially endanger small boats navigating the Rajang River and its numerous tributaries.

Those depending on river transport have also been advised to be vigilant in looking out for floating deadwood and debris, which could endanger small boats in particular.

Villagers living along riverbanks and low lying areas have also been advised to be on alert.
