SIBU: Express boat operators here are not resuming operation for the Sibu/Kuching/Sibu sector for the time being, says chairman of Sarawak 3rd, 6th,7th Division Express Association Lau Hieng Choon.

“With high running cost and diesel price increase, we don’t see any reason to resume operation for the time being due to very low volume of passengers,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The service was temporarily suspended on Aug 1 when inter-zone travel was restricted until Aug 14 to prevent the spread of Covid-19 to green zones in the state.

“Even before the restriction, passenger volume was low so we might as well suspend the service for the time being or run into heavy losses.

“People do not like to travel now for fear of Covid-19, the hassle of standard operating procedures and unfavourable economy,” he added.

A random survey at the express boat terminal yesterday morning saw only a few passengers waiting for boats to Song and Kapit.
