KUCHING (Oct 22): Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has commended the Malaysia Airlines flight crew of MH2742 for their professionalism and composure in handling a cabin pressure incident mid-flight on Oct 21 in accordance with standard safety procedures.
“I am relieved to learn that all passengers and crew members landed safely at Bintulu Airport,” he said in a statement today.
The incident, involving Malaysia Airlines flight MH2742 from Kuala Lumpur to Bintulu, drew public attention after passenger Abdul Jalil Bujang shared his harrowing experience on Facebook, describing how the aircraft reportedly lost cabin pressure about two hours into the flight.
According to his account, passengers heard “strange noises” before oxygen masks dropped from the overhead compartments.
Lee said he was informed that, in line with standard operating procedures, the flight crew carried out a controlled rapid descent to 10,000 feet before landing safely at Bintulu Airport at 10.31am.
He expressed appreciation to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), air traffic control personnel, and other relevant authorities for their swift and professional coordination during the incident.
“Malaysia Airlines has issued a statement that a comprehensive internal review is being conducted to identify the cause of the issue and to prevent a recurrence.
“I have been informed that Kuching Radar and Bintulu Tower Air Traffic Controllers immediately gave priority clearance to the aircraft, ensuring that it could land safely without delay,” he said.
Lee said the Sarawak Transport Ministry will continue to monitor all flights to, from, and within the state, placing the highest priority on passenger safety.
“My ministry will continue to work closely with federal authorities, aviation regulators, and airline operators to ensure that all safety standards and protocols are strictly observed at all times,” he said.
