KUCHING (Dec 9): Sarawak’s air connectivity with China received a major boost with the successful launch of Loong Air’s inaugural direct route between Shenzhen (SZX) and Kuching International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday, marking a new milestone in China–Sarawak travel links.

Speaking at a press conference after the touchdown of flight GJ8055, Sarawak Ministry for Transport Permanent Secretary Datu Wong Hee Sieng said the new route opens the door for more direct links between Sarawak and major Chinese cities.

“We were informed verbally that two new destinations―Hangzhou and Guangzhou―will be launched in March next year,” he said.

He said additional direct flights will greatly enhance mobility between Kuching and mainland China, eliminating the need for transits in Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu.

The newly introduced Shenzhen–Kuching service operates as a scheduled charter, with weekly flights every Tuesday starting Dec 9.

“Today’s flight, code GJ8055, departed Shenzhen at 8.20am and arrived in Kuching at 12.50pm.

“The return service, GJ8056, will depart Kuching at 7.55pm and is expected to land in Shenzhen at 12.05am,” Wong said.

He revealed that the inaugural Shenzhen-Kuching flight carried 85 passengers out of the aircraft’s 171-seat capacity, while the return flight to Shenzhen tonight is fully booked with 171 seats taken.

Meanwhile, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping said the route will strengthen ties between Shenzhen and Sarawak.

He described Shenzhen as one of China’s most innovative and economically dynamic cities ― an attractive destination for Sarawakians ― while Kuching’s cultural richness and hospitality continue to draw interest from travellers from China.

“Shenzhen holds an important place in the hearts of the Sarawakians.

“Many travel there for tourism or business,” he said.

Xing added that he hopes to see more Chinese and Malaysian airlines launch connections linking Sarawak with additional major cities across China.
