KUCHING (Nov 1): A direct flight between Kuantan and Kuching may soon become a reality once Air Borneo begins operations, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the route would further strengthen ties between Sarawak and Pahang, while boosting tourism, trade and cultural exchange between the two states.

“Through joint promotion, cultural exchange and stronger air and land connectivity, Sarawak and Pahang can showcase to the world the true beauty and joy of Malaysia.

“God willing, when we begin flights under Air Borneo, Kuantan and Kuching will be connected,” he said when speaking at the Malam Mesra Sarawak–Pahang dinner held at the State Legislative Assembly’s banquet hall here last night.

The dinner was hosted by Sarawak government for the visiting Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Also present were Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Al-Sultan Abdullah had earlier, on Sept 9, suggested the introduction of a direct Kuantan–Kuching flight under the newly formed Air Borneo.

Abang Johari said both Sarawak and Pahang share many similarities, particularly in terms of biodiversity, cultural heritage and natural beauty, which offer vast opportunities for collaboration in eco-tourism and cultural tourism.

“This year, Sarawak is targeting RM12.7 billion in tourism revenue. As of August 2025, the state has already achieved RM8.2 billion, showing that we are on the right track,” he said.

He also highlighted Sarawak’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Mulu National Park and Niah National Park — as well as its recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, all of which have strengthened the state’s global tourism profile.

Abang Johari expressed appreciation to Al-Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah, saying their continued engagement symbolises unity between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.

He said Sarawakians still cherish the royal couple’s previous visits, particularly during Al-Sultan Abdullah’s tenure as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, when His Majesty showed genuine care for the welfare of people across the state during the Kembara Kenali Borneo tour in 2023.

“Their Majesties’ presence left a deep impression on the people of Sarawak and will always be remembered as a symbol of unity between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia,” he said.

He also commended Tengku Ampuan Pahang for her continuous efforts in promoting traditional crafts, saying her initiatives have strengthened collaboration between Kraftangan Malaysia, Pahang and Sarawak in the areas of weaving and handicraft.

Meanwhile, Al-Sultan Abdullah in his brief remarks, expressed his deep affection and fond memories of Sarawak, saying that the state and its people will always hold a special place in his heart.

He said he often looks back at videos from that royal tour and cherishes the bonds formed with Sarawakians.

He also also voiced his hope to see closer connectivity between Pahang and Sarawak, suggesting that AirBorneo could consider including Kuantan as one of its destinations.

“I was informed that AirBorneo will commence operations soon—why not let it stop in Kuantan? We can then promote both the beauty of Sarawak and Pahang, and at the same time strengthen the ties between our people, God willing,” he said.

During the dinner, Al-Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah also sang few songs and danced the ‘poco-poco’ with the other dignitaries.

The event had featured singers, cultural performers and troupes from both Pahang and Sarawak.
