KOTA SAMARAHAN (May 9): The Economy Ministry has approved the upgrading of the Miri Airport terminal building at a cost of RM445 million under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the approval, which was granted on April 27, was based on the findings of the value assessment conducted on March 17.

He said the airport’s expansion was crucial, in view of it being the next busiest airport in Sarawak after Kuching International Airport.

“Besides serving as a major domestic airport, Miri Airport also functions as the main hub for the Rural Air Services operated by AirBorneo, which connects urban centres with interior areas in Sarawak and Sabah,” he said when officiating at the launch of the new Bas.MY Kuching routes.

Loke said the upgrade should increase Miri Airport’s capacity from two million passengers per annum to four million.

“This improvement aims to accommodate future capacity needs through the expansion of the terminal building and other related facilities.

“It will also enhance the operational capability and efficiency of Miri Airport through greater use of automated and self-service applications, including check-in, departure clearance, and immigration processes.

“In addition, it will help maintain the optimum level of service standards set by the International Air Transport Association, thereby improving passenger satisfaction, comfort and overall travel experience,” he said.

Loke added the project would help ensure the long-term sustainability of airport operations to meet growing traffic demand through the addition of passenger facilities, expanded use of digital systems, upgrading of aircraft parking areas and enlargement of the terminal building.

“Furthermore, it will improve passenger safety through the full segregation of domestic and international passengers in compliance with requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.”

Also present were federal Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Jana Santhiran Muniayan; Ministry of Transport Sarawak permanent secretary Datu Wong Hee Sieng, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Sarawak chairman Michael Kong, and Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd managing director Lai Sin Kiong.
