KUCHING (Jan 18): Motorists using the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway have reported smooth flow of traffic near the Tabuan Tranquillity area today after the newly installed traffic light intersection there went operational and open to the public this morning.

According to reports, this traffic light intersection was the first of the five to be completed along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway.

“I was glad that when I went to work this morning, the traffic flow there was smooth and I did not experience any traffic congestion when driving in the area,” added Desiree David, one of the motorists who was contacted today.

Another motorist, Roystein Emmor also said that he was relieved to see the traffic light intersection installed was operational and open to the public today.

This was because like Desiree, he had no choice but to ply the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway almost every day to go to work.

“Now I can look forward to going to work, experiencing less headache because the traffic congestion along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway was a nightmare for me before this.

“I hope the whole project to install traffic light intersections along the expressway will be completed as soon as possible,” said Roystein.

As for the condition of the traffic at the area this late afternoon, another motorist Chimon Upon who took photos of the traffic lights there also said that traffic at the area was smooth flowing.

Meanwhile an officer from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) Corporate Communication branch when contacted today said that the operation of the traffic light intersection installed at the Tabuan Tranquillity area will be permanent.

“It is not on an operational test run and it is now fully operational,” he said.

There are currently ongoing works to install traffic light intersections along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway which involved converting five roundabouts along the expressway into traffic light intersections for smoother traffic flows both ways.

Works on the project to install them have however caused massive traffic congestion at the expressway recently, especially during peak hours.

Many motorists vented their anger and frustration on social media regarding the massive traffic congestion along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway since the project was implemented.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council chairman Dato Peter Minos have recently requested patience from motorists who use the expressway while work on the project is being carried out.

It has been revealed that the whole upgrading package costing RM72.7 million has been awarded to a rescue contractor Glumox Abiz Sdn Bhd after the first contractor failed to perform as expected.

The state government is targetting all traffic lights intersections to be installed along the expressway by Jan 10 next year.
