KUCHING (Oct 12): The 2027 Sarawak Budget has set aside a sum of RM1 million next year for the initial masterplan study on the proposed New Kuching International Airport (KIA).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed new KIA will serve as a regional hub, designed to handle 15 million passengers annually.

“The proposed new KIA will come with a 4,000-metre Code 4E runway and an integrated aerotropolis for maintenance, repair and air freight logistics.

“This is in line with Sarawak’s effort in strengthening its aviation infrastructure to boost passenger travel, freight, tourism, trade and regional connectivity,” he said in his Budget Speech in the august House on Monday.

Abang Johari said Sarawak is also upgrading its regional and rural airports to support safe and reliable connectivity.

He said the extended Limbang Airport runway to 1,790 metres, and the newly-completed Bebuling Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport) with its 1,190-metre runway, will enhance capacity, safety and rural mobility to drive Betong’s agropolitan growth.

A sum of RM25 million and RM11.5 million respectively will be provided for these projects in 2027.

He said the state is embarking on the Sarawak Ports Masterplan study with an allocation of RM8 million next year.

According to him, this masterplan will lay the foundation for a more efficient, integrated and future-ready port system that will strengthen Sarawak’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

“Ports are vital gateways for Sarawak, connecting our industries, businesses and communities to domestic and global markets. As our economy diversifies and trade volumes grow, we must ensure that our port infrastructure is ready to support this expansion.”

To ensure the safety of Sarawak’s maritime and riverine transport, Abang Johari said RM32.8 million will be allocated next year for the riverine landing facilities and maritime safety infrastructure.

Among the projects are Vessel Tracking Management Systems and Aids to Navigation for Sungai Miri, Sarawak and Kuala Baram, Miri; rebuilding Kuala Baram Lighthouse; and upgrading the Sungai Sarawak Barrage and Shiplock.
